Ljubljana - Breg Palace Apartment

About this project

This fairly simplistic mansion from the outside used to have a very important function back in the day. The baron and very important intellectual Žiga Zois inherited this place from his father and converted it into a gathering centre of the intellectual and social elite of Ljubljana. It is the place where members of the Zois circle have been gathering in the past and where Zois stored his extensive collection of 4000 books and more than 5000 different stone minerals. As such the building is protected as cultural heritage and we embarked this project having its past in our mind. Instead of bringing in the characteristics of modern interior design, we wanted to build our ideas around the original space.

A careful observer will notice the stuccos and rosettes on the top ceiling. We preserved their original form and they now additionally bring that feeling of grandeur to space. 

The idea for the smaller bedroom has been based on the story about the "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". Each bed has an individual design as we bought them separately from a Slovene antique shop and gave them a fresh bright look. Each of the beds has a "matching" closet across the room that has a special mesh door window to keep the air flowing keeping the clothes fresh. 

We have completely replaced the old kitchen with the bespoke kitchen, designed specifically for our client, who is a great cooking enthusiast. What makes this kitchen unique, are tall cabinets and seamless tile work on backsplash walls. The black Smeg retro cooker brings a nice contrast to all the lightness in the space and compliments the beautiful new dark hardwood floors.

As we love creating big spacious living areas, we had to remove the old wall, which was awkwardly dividing the kitchen from the living room. Space now looks grand and functional.
